Re: [ATM] Too Small Optics-( and flex produced optics)

Anyone who hasn't seen a very smooth asphere has led a "sheltered life".

I tested, for Brent Bennet ("Telescopics") a 12.5" f.4 mirror. It was the
most perfect optic I ever tested. The chief optician in charge of its
figuring was the man who figured the optics of the Du Pont 101" Rictchey
Chretian telescope in Chile. All I could say was, "wow". Brent published a
full page testimonial from me about this mirror. I just couldn't figure out
a fool-proof way to steal it.

P.S. Mirror was smoother than a baby's bottom. (perfect edge).

The mak surfaces are aspherics that were bent to spheres for figuring? Those
thick meniscus mak blanks can be really hard to bend to bulge the center of
the concave with the hose clamp method. But never say never.

If one starts out thinking that everything can be done by every method
nothing would be get done. Right. So in the interest of success we
contemplate what will work (right) and make choices.

Are you saying that you have shown that a smooth surface can only be made on
a sphere? Do you believe it can't be done on an asphere?

Then don't! However, there are a few that have maksutovs that can testify to
the super smoothness that can be realized with spherical surfaces. I have
several maksutovs made by the late Max Bray that are very smooth indeed.

If one starts out believing something cannot be done, then it probably
won't. Just because one shows one can't get from here to there by a
particular path doesn't mean there isn't some other path that will lead from
here to there.
