The rapid slope change on fast aspheres makes it difficult to achieve
smoothness. The relative ease of making very smooth spheres, and less light
scatter when released as aspheres, makes it desireable.

Are you saying that you have shown that a smooth surface can only be made on
a sphere? Do you believe it can't be done on an asphere?

the super smoothness that can be realized with spherical surfaces. I have
several maksutovs made by the late Max Bray that are very smooth indeed.
If one starts out believing something cannot be done, then it probably
won't. Just because one shows one can't get from here to there by a
particular path doesn't mean there isn't some other path that will lead from
here to there.
