While reviewing an old ATM Journal (Issue # 13, circa 1996) I ran across 
an article on "Design and Construction of a Modern Herschelian" by Gary 
Frishkorn which describes his technique of "stressed mirror polishing" 
to produce an off-axis paraboloid. He shows a "practical harness that 
could be used to warp the mirror during polishing", applying loads via 
kevlar loops epoxied to the sides of the mirror.
