[ATM] Melting Pitch.....

    To all,

  I enjoyed Bob May's ways of melting pitch.  My first experiences were hit 
and miss.
    I boiled the hell out of this strange brew of pine tar, and whatever 
else was in there.
  I had read that the addition of "pure" turpentine would soften it up if 
you burned off
too much Hydrocarbons.  I used to use a propane torch to melt the pitch off 
of a lap into
an aluminum foil tray, flames and smoke were present..
          Use the lowest heat possible and experiment with the flow of this 
strange brew. You
can mold, patch, move,replace, and change the shape of this stuff any way 
you want to.
  Just remember that roofing tar is very close to being the same, just many 
degrees softer..or
harder.. I forget... (somebody on this list years ago used "pure" roofing 
tar as a lap substance,
and was sucessful in making a manhole cover)    Russ Jocoy   Melt on that
