If you use reasonable care, you should  have no problems using an open 
flame.  People have done that for a long time.  Is it the first choice? 
  Probably not.  Hot plates work well.  The coffee maker should work if 
the amount of pitch isn't too great.  Otherwise, I would worry about it 
being too cold at the top of the pot.  These things all have differing 
temps.
