Indeed! Before you look down on someone for buying optics, realize that 
everyone buys something pre-made for their scope. I don't think I've ever met 
anyone who made their own glass from sand and materials they mined 
themselves, for instance.

OTOH, I'd encourage everyone to try making a mirror somewhere along the line. 
The worst that could happen (assuming you don't shatter the darn thing 
completely) is you have a partially made mirror to sell (which is worth at 
least as much as the blank cost in the first place)!
