Re: [ATM] 4.5"x 3/4" Pyrex disks at Surplus Shed and Acculap

Curtis,

There is a record in an old Sky and Telescope magazine (I forgot what year)
that recounts a man doing his very first effort: a 20" mirror!!!

Although he said he made many mistakes, in the end he had a near perfect
optic. The article showed a focograph that seemed near perfect to me (knife
edge set to null the .7071 zone).

Read my article, for confidence, and then, do whatever size you want to. I
believe the record is a 36", for a first mirror, by Ritchey's "mentor"
Andrew Ainslee Common. Here is a link to my article:

Mirror making is 99 % inspiration, and one percent perspiration (I'm not
kidding). In other words, get all the concepts clearly in mind, and the rest
is just donkey work. You will love it!

Dave

I'm new to the list and I don't own a telescope. I am considering
buying a $5 blank from the site and giving it a try.

Is it worth the effort for a first scope? Or should I start with
something bigger? I don't have any mirror making supplies so, I'll be
doing this from scratch (no pun intended).
