RE: [ATM] More Mirror Disasters!
I should have mentioned in my last post that sleeks aren't very long.
Average length might be about a half inch even if you are using a long
stroke. And in my experience if you have them you have a lot of them.
If contaminates embed in the pitch they will scratch in the forward and back
stroke leaving scratches that are the length of the stroke and look like
eccentric orbits. They will tend to concentrate in the center.
I see the many comments you have received. If from the above you would think
that you have sleeks, then just change your technique to see if that removes
them. Use less polishing agent and stroke slower. If you can see through the
back of the mirror you can see changes in the shade of the facets with the
speed of the stroke. The change is due to the thickness of water and rouge
between the glass and the facets. Obviously if you let that film get thicker
then there is less action with the rouge that is embedded in pitch and more
with particles that are being brought in with the thicker film. Some of them
will grab into the pitch and scratch until pushed farther down.
I suppose it is possible that you have contaminated polishing agent or
water. BUT Sleeks do not necessarily mean the polishing agent or water is
contaminated. I have had sleeks and gotten rid of them with the same rouge
and water supply that put them in. I suppose there are some who thought that
their polishing agent was contaminated who changed supply and while trying
to remove sleeks, improved there technique and became convinced the cause of
the sleeks was their source for polishing agent. The proved it. They got a
new supply and after a while their sleeks went away. It might just be that
they got better at what they were doing.

Hi all,
Last evening while working at figuring my 8 inch f6.3 I managed to get
something between the lap and the mirror which resulted in lots of tiny
(almost imperceptable) scratches all over my mirror.
Confused :-0
