Re: [ATM] Reflex finders
Michael, all-
Glad for these links. Some nice stuff here, Michael- Thanks.
How many know that the reflex "finder" was actually a development for the
war (by Germany) to use as gunsights on their fighters, and pictures of the
cockpits of BF-109s, which had them first, had them airbrushed out of the
picture by the censors? I have a picture of Charles Lindbergh being shown a
BF-109 cockpit, including the reflex gunsight, and the author of the book,
in his caption, says he was very surprised to see that picture without the
censor's airbrush marks on the gunsight. The picture was made in 1938 or
'39, when Lindbergh was invited to Germany to see aviation progress there. A
Luftwaffe pilot was showing him everything; I don't know if they let Lucky
Lindy fly the thing or not. The Germans built an astonishing 33,000 of those
fighters (109).
After the war, Eisenhower invited this brilliant man (Willy Messerscmidt) to
the United States to work; but he declined, and stayed home to help rebuild
his country's shattered aviation industry.
Aviation and atm-ing have so many things in common that it is astonishing.
But the American pilots of the P-51 laughed at the German fighters; the P-51
was one order of magnitude ahead of any other fighter in the sky (except the
ME-262, twin axial flow jet engine powered fighter).
It is said that Hitler asked Goering (or Adolf Galland asked Goering;)-
Flying Wing Man will straighten me, watch and see: "What do we need to
defeat these Brits?" (Or something along those lines) and Goering answered
Galland: "Spitfires".
