[ATM] pitch lap question

How important is plaster in a pitch lap?
I attempted my first lap tonight and the first try was a disaster. 
I'm sure you've all been there, done that, but I poured too soon. 
Didn't fill the tool, so back in the pot it went.  Had to chip off
the pitch that was on the tool since I barely had enough to begin
with.  So, I remelted and repoured and the second attempt was a
success.  BUT, there may be a few pieces of plaster mixed in with the
lap (I tried very hard to remove all the plaster).  What's the worst
case scenerio?  If the plaster is on the surface will it scratch the
mirror?  Has anyone had this experience?  What a pain it was!
