Re: [ATM] Understanding Foucault
Thanks for providing the URL of the article!
The idea of providing the common motion of both the light source and the KE
is the proper way to do the testing as the other idea of putting the source
at a fixed location and moving only the KE is actually testing for eliptical
surfaces near the parabola and the idea is to find the parabola rather than
an eliptical surface near a parabola.
In addition, the source near the returned beam also reduces the vertical
elipticallity of the image as well as the horizontal with the slitless
tester being the reduction of the horizontal to 0 and however close the
source and return are on the KE, the vertical as well. The perfect solution
is to use a beamsplitter cube to get the two beams coincident and that is
what should be used for optics under about F4.
