Pretty much by the time that you get past about 16" of diameter, it becomes
extremely difficult to push a lap across the mirror by hand which means that
you are probably going to be using a subdiameter lap anyway.
Considering that I have seen 10" laps that want to grab so much that it is
difficult to push them, I'd feel for anybody that is going to do a 16" lap
that is like that.
