[ATM] Trepanning 101
Gang,
Here's a question. What if you wanted to trepan a 10" disk from 1" thick "plate" glass (yes, I know that plate is usually considered to be 1/2" thick, bit I digress). What if I bought a Dayton 3M330 shaded pole motor (max 68 rpm) and attached a speed control to it so it was then 1-68 RPM continuous duty on AC. Then, what if I made a steel strap/plastic disk like James Lerch did and affixed it to the motor shaft, facing downward onto the "plate" glass which was attached securely to a plywood platform. If I rotated the glass 180 degrees whilst cutting at the halfway point, and I used water and #60 grit, should I (theoretically) have myseff a brand new 10" glass blank sans major chips? Assuming this all works, what do you guys think the size/production limits would be on such a setup? How big could I go on blanks? Has it been tried before? Should it be tried now? These are all questions I seek to answer...
