Hi David,
I made my 16" telescope tube (not a tube really) from four octoganal frames
and 8 -1" thick sections of electrical conduit.  The base was made from 8
ply pine plywood.  The OTA, with my 16.5" mirror mounted weighs about 40
pounds.  The base weighs about 45.  I move it with a 2 wheel hand dolly, but
I can carry the two pieces easily by hand.  If you want a picture, I'll send
it to you.
