Been there, done that. My last big lap was a mess too.

One possibility I just thought about this week-end
is simply to buy four (4) lap molds and lie them together before pouring.
And four 12" lap molds are easier to store safely than one 24".

PS: Have restarted the polishing of my monster this week-end. Still not
polished out, when looking carefully. Will end figuring with a half
diameter
(22") pitch lap.
