I don't use no damn dam at all.    Just let the pitch cool to where it is
on the thick side.    Pour it onto the foundation, and then spread it
around with a chopstick to achieve uniform thickness.    Local
irregularities are easily fixed with a blowtorch prior to hot pressing on
the glass.

(for my ribbed mirror blanks, I grind a simple meniscus of 1/4" plate glass
for the purpose of pressing the pitch).

While pouring the pitch, I chant "damn de damn dam, damn de damn dam 
DAMN!"  (to the tune of "dragnet" theme)
