The pitch doesn't need to be in squares although balancing the number of
edges and area of pitch across the lap is a good idea.  Remember that
Texerau recommends that the lap grooves not be centered on the lap but be
offset by some value.  Why, I don't know as I figure any position of the
grooves should be good.
I've used round and hex lap molds and they both produce quick and perfect
laps with little effort.
