It takes alot of strokes to make a good mirror.

I have done this also, and it works. Though I felt like I was
having to handle the pitch twice.  This also brings up the
question, do the facets have to be square?  When I did a
lap with precast pitch I just broke off small pieces and
left gaps between them on the tool.  All of the shapes were
irregular.  It polished the mirror OK.

Me too!  I was in a class recently and some of the kits came
with a yellowish material to use for laps.  It was softer I
think and I know two of the people in the class were having to
recut the facets at least once or twice a session.
