I've had one plate glass mirror break due to temp extremes but that piece of
glass (which I unfortunately never checked for strain) wouldn't go back
together after it cooled which tends to indicate that there were stress
problems in it.  It was also giving some strange results on the Foucault
tester so I now suspect that the glass was strained.  The guy that was
pollshing it was quite philisophical after having it break.  He's now
grinding a replacement for the first mirror.
