I always soak mirror and tool (at least glass and plaster ones) in warm, then 
hot water before pouring a lap. My tap water gets up to about 120 degrees (F, 
not C :-) Melted pitch is something like 150 degrees (at least if you heat it 
just until it's melted, not until it smokes)!

A note about the new synthetic pitch. Since it's clear, and the index of 
refraction changes when it's melted, it's pretty easy to see when the pitch 
is melted all the way through, and mixed properly; at least easier than with 
traditional pitch.
