Yes, there's some risk with plate glass and the hot/warm pitch. 
Thanks for pointing out my omission.

Properly made Pyrex should not break due to this type of thermal shock.

I have used the aforementioned technique with small plate glass tools 
(4.25") with no problems.  We used it with an 8" x 1/2" plate glass 
tool with no problems, too.  I have no experience with larger plate 
glass tools.

Note:  The owner of that 8" tool (much later, after it had completely 
cooled to 70 degrees, room temperature) took it from his house to his 
30 degree garage to channel it where he wouldn't make a mess, and THEN 
it broke!  See

So, this technique should be fine with 6" or smaller plate glass 
tools, but use it at your own risk above this size with plate glass, 
and don't channel in a cold garage!
