This isn't really in depth, but this article has quite a lot of interesting 
information about the history of eyepiece design and at least mentions the 
Pretoria:

Peter Smith is the resident expert on eyepieces. He has a huge collection 
of patent applications from the U.S. in his files and maybe from other 
countries by now.
