Interesting little test!  Sounds like it needs a bit more work but will
probably be a completely different way to do testing.
I would suspect that the diagonal line is from the height of the source to
detector isn't right.  I don't know if it's the offset of the two or that
you were just not getting the setup exactly right for alignment.
Another item is that it may be a reflection from the backside.
Then again, you may have a astigmatic mirror.
