Thank you very much for the elaboration on RMS & mean square error.  It is very 
interesting that mean square error is approximately proportional to the lowering 
of the diffraction peak (for small errors).

The source for the sensitivity curves refers to them as Photopic (Day vision): 
cones active. To be used above 3 cd/m2  and  Scoptopic (Night Vision): only rods 
active. To be used below 3 cd/m2

Are you saying that our telescopes get images bright enough that Photopic vision 
becomes important?  Well, now that I think about it, for planetary viewing, I 
suppose it must, or we wouldn't see those pretty colors.  Right?
