ATM How do you properly cement the mirror hole plug

Hi,

To test my grinding machine I am making a 8" cass type
holed mirror. On my last mirror I cut the hole almost
to the front and after figuring I cut through the rest
and as a result a had a few nasty chips. 

This time I decided to cut all the way through and
glue the core back. I used expoxy glue and fine
grinding went ok! But as soon as I started polishing
the expoxy ring around the plug seems to erode my lap.
The lap became pitted and brownish! I reasoned it was
the epoxy and so I carefully removed a bit and
replaced it with dental stone. 

My question is how you masters out there actually glue
the plug back onto the mirror? Will dental stones lead
to scratches in polishing?
