Re: ATM First timer - ecstatic!
Hi Marty,
No glue involved whatsoever. I bought the porcelain tiles (harder than standard ceramic) from a local tile shop - unglazed (although I don't think this matters). I got a 300 x 300mm sheet for a grand total of $3.50 (NZ) which is well less than $2 American! I left the tiles on the backing mesh and cut the mesh very roughly to shape. I used a tile breaking tool (again very cheap - less than $10) to break some tiles to fit the spaces left over around the edges. I then coated the hogged out blank very liberally with petroleum jelly and stuck the tiles into this goo. Wrapped the entire contraption with a wide strip of duct tape to act as a mould. I mixed up the dental stone according to instructions and poured / spooned it in, then banged the table it was sitting on repeatedly to vibrate the air bubbles out. It had set hard in about 10 minutes, and I was able to peel the duct tape off and slide the tool off sideways. I then ground the back of the tool on some concrete outside to level it off, and left it to cure for about an hour, although it probably wasn't even this long!
There's heaps of really good resources out there on the net for tile tools, and this is a bit of combination of a couple of methods recommended - I chose to do it this way because it seemed much easier and didn't involve mucking around with epoxies etc. No regrets whatsoever - couldn't have been easier!
Hope this is some help.
Regards,
Aidan

Hi,
Thats realy quick! Did you glue some tiles on the "Dental stone", and what glue
did you use that cured in no time at all??

Poured some "Dental stone" into the newly formed mould and waited for it to
set. Hey Presto - one grinding tool! I gave it about an hour to cure, then did
some more grinding with the 80 grit to even the curve out. Managed to get the
220 grit completed by the end of Saturday, and poor weather on Sunday meant I
was back into it from the word "GO"!
