ATM seeking mirror chip advice
I need some advice on chip impact. The 18" x 2" f/4.5 I just bought
(second hand) has a minor chip on the edge (hopefully only minor).
It has been smoothed over nicely from the (reputable) vendor, this is
how it came originally. It is 3/16" x 3/4" wide x 1/32" deep at the
deepest (edge). This is the overall size, like I said it has been
smoothed and blended in nicely. The area is not coated. The person
I bought it from said the vendor told him if he doesn't like it send
it back, but after he put it in his scope and saw the performance he
didn't want to send it back. He said he could split Zeta Aquarii (2
arcsec) without an aperture stop. He has been using it since 1991,
it needed recoated, so he upgraded to a 24".
My primary (pun intended) concern is if this will come back to haunt
me. He also said he will buy it back from me even pay for the
recoating too if I don't like it. A clip will cover most of it, but
not all of it.
I believe it's an excellent mirror, but I don't know much about how a
smoothed over chipped edge will affect the lifespan of the glass, ie.
could it break apart in 5 years?
Am I being anal retentive here?
Any help greatly appreciated.
Bill
