I am told that part of the problem with the APDs is that
the power supply, etc is very costly to construct. The
APDs themselves are not so expensive and I could envision
tricks with mirrors, etc to get imaging with them. Have
you considered this option? Also, I have heard conflicting
stories about how far into the IR these are sensitive.
