ATM amateur infrared imaging
Frank is right, but you can probably get a low end image for less. Something
could probably be done in the $15k-$20k range. Rockwell also makes the
PICNIC array that appears to be the follow-on to the NICMOS. The Hawaii
chips are the newest. Anyway, a 1/4 good (128x128) engineering grade PICNIC
is in the $12k range (I'm not at the computer with the info so that from
memory).
I've looked into it as part of my AO project. I have played with several
ideas and it looks like it would be easy to build the electronics. The issue
is the price of the array.
In the mean time, our CCDs will work in the I-Band...
