I guess that the thing here is to just make a new lens. Don't know why I'd
say such a thing on this email list but that sounds like a nice idea.
Actually, depending upon the maker of the scope, you may be able to get some
blanks from the russians or germans and make an even better lens than what
you had. I'd put the breaker of the lens to do the work and pay for 1/2 of
the cost of the glass with the club picking up the rest.
I might also note that polishing up a lens is easier than a mirror as you
merely need to make the surfaces spherical rather than parabolic. You also
can test the lens at any point while polishing for correct workmanship
unlike a mirror which can only be tested after it's essentially finished.
