Stan,

I am no shining example of stellar photometry, and certainly
not infrared, but I have built very simple IR PIN photodiode
photometer based on the Siemens photodiodes, one PIN detector
and an IR LED as standard. For reasons beyond my comprehension,
not everything I want to uplaod to my web page ends up on
that web page, but the parts list is there as well as some
of the first paragraphs of instructions. I am very busy
working in my lab right now and have not had chance to
correct the web page. Somewhere in my computer here in the
lab I have schematics and PCB layout, which I will upload
in near future (my cousin in California wants to build this
too). I need to do some work on the description of the head,
but basically, you can stick the sealed detector into a case
filled with dry ice, classical cooling for PMTs, for which I
am most personally well acquainted. The rest depends on your
optical and photometry abilities and requirements. I know
the pros have used such detectors, so this need not be a
toy, but it is dirt cheap to start with (and could be used
as a toy)... :)

Please feel free to collect whatever info is on my web
page and ask questions....
