You should always have an even surface behind the mirror.  I use a painted
black surface behind the mirror for the obvious reasons and it works well.
As to the wire test, we really need somebody that is using it (I've
recommended it but have never done it yet) to actually sit down and write an
article on it (I'll even go to the point where I'll get it ready for the
internet if you can't handle HTML coding - just contact me offlist) so that
everybody has a reference to start from.  I know that everybody that will do
the test will make their own version of the wire test (look at all the
variations of the Foucault tester that are out there!) and we'll gradually
get a good idea of what works and what doesn't.
