I use two rather basic packages. One is Expert Astronomer which is really
easy to use . It also has the added bonus of featuring a viewer that has
videos, mpegs and a lot of inforamtion on astronomy. This is ideal for kids
or anyone who is learning about astronomy or quickly needs a reference. The
other is Sky Map. Sky Map is also very good and has extra features such as
maps that can be saved as bitmaps that I use to track asteroids, comets,
bright meteors and man made satellites. I have sent a few of these maps to
AAVSO when I have suspected nova giving the position, magnitude, colour and
other relevant details. Both these software packages are inexpensive but
have all the features you will need.
