RE: ATM astronomy software?

I will third the recommendation on Starry Night- it has a lot of good
stuff for starting astronomers, but it also has plenty of "guts".

One big advantage that Starry Night has for an ATM is that it has a
great plug-in architecture, which allows those so motivated to extend
the functionality of the program.
I'm involved in a group right now that is working on a
digital setting circle and scope drive system, and part of that
system is a plug in for Starry Night, for now. It gives us access to
a great user interface and database of objects and allows us to
concentrate on our stuff.

There is a plug-in SDK available on their site, both mac and windoze versions.
