Re: ATM servo vs stepper motors

Does this mean that if I use a servo motor I would not need to buy encoders?

A stepper motor moves in steps, normaly around 1/8 of a degree.
it has multiple windings that are controlled to move the stepper to an exact position.
The ones I use have 6 wires.
The servo motors are simply a dc motor with a opticle encoder.
The electronics read the encoder and controll the dc motor.
For a real explanation you need to check out mells site:
Hope this helps

Can anybody explain me what is the difference in the way stepper and a servo motor  works.
When should I use one or another for telescope control. Is one more complex to control than the other?
