Foucault readings are undeniably a sparse sample.  But I feel that amateur 
"RMS-like" claims are still warranted, since additional simple tests like 
the Ronchi test and the shearing interferometer test establish whether or 
not the sampled points are typical of the overall surface.  In a sense, 
these additional qualitative tests serve to extrapolate the Foucault 
readings over a larger area.
