Just a little clarification: you have twice as many
spikes as you have vanes.

A single stalk will give you two spikes, opposite each
other.
With a symmetrical 4 vane spider, you get 8 spikes,
overlapping in pairs, which visually gives you 4 spikes,
but twice as bright.

With a 3 vane spider, you get 6 spikes (two from each
vane), but they are much fainter than the overlapping
spikes of a 4 vane spider.
