I've never done this, so this is a shot in the dark. Could you use dental
plaster up to about 1/4" from the surface of the mirror to secure the plug,
and then fill the remaining ring with pitch? You could just leave this in
throughout polishing, and none of that icky plaster stuff would meet the
face of your mirror.
