I seem to recall a discussion on the astrophotography mailing list a couple
months ago about this very thing

It was a discussion led by the programmer at Astrophysics that helped
develop some pointing software for their high end mounts.  I think he
mentions being able to do it by daylight on brighter stars so that you are
in no rush during twilight.
