The issue is figure.  Princically, residual spherical abberation.  One
common problem contributes to high orders, that is, turned edge.  Alas, a
turned edge declares it's extent quite clearly in a ronchii.

Masking or apodizing the aperature, has been descussed previously.  Check
the archives.  But don't let me diswade you from starting and keeping a
thread going.  I'de like to see more people think, experiment, research and
report about what they've found.  There is a great deal that can be done
with images through apodization.  Among many amatures, the apature is an
all too often ignored optical element.
