Re: ATM Cook Triplett

>Anyone out there ever make a Cook Triplett ala ATM III?

I've played with 4" f/4.5 Cooke triplet (used to be a projection lens),
and it had lots of residual spherical aberration. After refiguring R5
(closest to an internal f/stop), the chromatic aberration started to
dominate. It was never really good enough for astrophotography (blue
halo makes stars look blobby), but large field enables you to do some
contact prints (or 2X enlargements) that may look quite effective.
After realizing that my 180mm f/2.8 lens does look sharper when magnified
to the same scale, I've abandoned it. The Zeiss variant of it
(Tessar, which has last positive as achromat) is far better.
For the same trouble/glass price make Schmidt. FAR superior to
just about anything else.
