We used stuff called 'opal glass' to make light diffusers in the lab.
It was about 1/8 to 1/4" thick & available from Edmund Scientific.

Lately I've been using white diffuse plexiglass, same thickness, to make
flat field full aperture diffuserd for CCD work. If anyone wants a small
piece, I have lots of scraps, just send an SASE. The plexiglass is much
easier to cut & mount than the glass & works just as well.
