Randy,
I don't know or remember which S&T this was in, but I made one of these
scopes and I have never seen the article at all.
Just find a suitable tube of the right size, either cardboard or PVC or
whatever, and put the lens in the end of the tube. Attach an eyepiece
holder to the other end and you have a scope. It's that simple!
In my case, I found a cardboard shipping tube that was just a tiny bit
undersized. These tubes are very sturdy. All I had to do was sand away
part of the inside diameter on one end of the tube, and the lens fit very
tightly as I pushed it into place in the tube. A small dab of RTV or
silicone glue holds it in place, or you could use some small setscrews. The
inside of the tube was painted flat black, and the outside can be
waterproofed and finished in a variety of ways. The other end holds a
plywood disk lathe-turned to just fit inside the tube. A hole is drilled in
the disk and an eyepiece holder is fastened into this hole. The eyepiece
holder I used was from an old barlow lens with the lens removed, and
focusing is accomplished by the push-pull method. A setscrew holds the
eyepiece in place, and you loosen the setscrew, push or pull the eyepiece
until the image is focused, and tighten the setscrew. Very simple. Works
for me!
