I've heard (NPR) that they use red light in large industrial chicken farms as it
makes the chickens less agressive.  They are currently exploring using tiny red chicken 
contact lenses as the red light enviroment is not condusive to the
 workers.

Alright this has nothing to do with dark adaptation, but isn't it nice to know
that all thoes chickens at the star parties will remain docile and not peck our
ankles.
