Hi Jim I don't know of anything lighter or stronger than graphite. But graphite alone will not be very forgiving. Combined with fiberglass it's much stronger and more forgiving. I do a great deal of sailing and alot of the compsite materials are showing up more and more on hardware thats under a great deal of stress. One thing you should keep in mind. and that is once a compsite goes ( breaks ) it's sudden no warning at all, and it shatters into tiny pieces, you might consider counter balancing the tube.
