For the ney sayers, I still share your skepticism. However, plastic
optics do appear in precision laboratory photometric equipment.
Plastic mirrors do exist, as do plastic Schmidt correctors. I
suspect things have changed a bit in recent years. I would
first check with some companies that make precision filters.
I know from the sales reps that these are now usually plastic
and they are going into photometric equipment with lower detection
limits than ever before. Despite my skepticism, I have to
admit our most recent equipment works very well. If I can find
some time, I could try specifying a few particular optical
components and their specifications.
