Aha, Mel! That's what I suspected. Many folks can't do that.

I Also suspect that a medium-warm-hot press with screening would be fine for most folks. And thus you can start working right away and try lots of different things in your session and find the strokes that work best for you by trial and error as well as by reading the sacred texts and by trying to understand the geometry of the whole affair. I find that quite a few of the strokes explained in Texereau et al don't seem to have the effect that the authors claim they will have.

I need to try your method of using an oversized lap at some point. Generally, I make mine just a tad undersized. I generally get turned edge and have to put in a lot of work to reduce it to the bare minimum, using very short strokes and a hard lap.

Mel answered:
 Now, in my method, it's important to work at least once a day, if not twice a day.  Otherwise you're forced into more elaborate and traditional methods to maintain lap contact.
