Yet the pro literature describes 6:5 oversized laps - see Brashear from the
late 1800's. I understand that o.s. laps were probably used from almost
the earliest times of mirror making?
o.s. laps are easy to stumble onto. I did so many years ago when pitch
gradually sunk and worked its way over the edge of a 100% sized polishing
tool. I saw that I had a most exquisite edge and parabolic correction in
the outer zones. I then cast a gaze about as to why that might be, and
zeroed in on the lap that was, by virtue of the lap squeezing over the
edges, a little oversized.
If you don't know what you're doing, follow the rules.
If you understand the principles, follow principles and forget the rules.
Principles give you a richer context with lots of possible solutions. Rules
only give you a single solution; governed by fear --- you best not deviate!
