I criss-cross the pitch surface with scratches from a razor blade (in a
suitably safe holder of course).  I either have the lap in a cold water bath
to catch the flying particles or spray water across the surface to wash the
chips off into a side buffer.  That way the chips don't go flying.

During polishing and initial figuring I re-facet when they close up (I don't
channel, relying solely on the scratches).  That's about every hour or so
with the heavy pressure that I use.
