Thanks all, for the advice.  This morning I redid the
test taking it into account and things look fine--with
short strokes the test is much more consistent, and as
I suspected (hoped) I've got good contact across the
disks.  

In contrast to several descriptions on the web the
Sharpie test best isn't done with a full wet, just a
brief grind-out to see how the surfaces match. When
you grind through a full wet the lines tell you where
the stroke is doing its work (edge, center, etc.), not
how well the surfaces match, which is instructive in
itself but doesn't tell us about sphericity.
